Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl: Simple, Delicious and Healthy Recipe

Updated: May 11, 2023

Spring is here! Time for a fun, lighter dish as we welcome in the sun. This week we would like to shine a light on our lovely Yellowfin Tuna, it's sashimi-grade with a mild taste. A poke bowl is the perfect fresh dish.

About Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi)

Tuna can get up to 6 feet long with a lifespan around 7 years. Yellowfin, also referred to as Ahi in Hawaiian, is often eaten raw (sushi-grade) or cooked medium rare with an outside hard sear.

Yellowfin (Ahi) Tuna Poke Bowl

This is a classic Hawaiian dish, very light, refreshing and healthy! Our recipe uses raw tuna that has been marinated with soy sauce, sesame oil and onion. The rest of the bowl is quick and easy to make at home - served over cold rice and optional veggies for some additional crunch.

  • Prep time: 15 minutes

  • Serving Size: 4-5

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Yellowfin Tuna, sushi-grade, cubed

  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce

    • Tamari sauce would work too and is usually GF

  • 1/2 tablespoon Rice Vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon Sesame Oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes

  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced Green Onion (save a little extra for garnish)

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Sesame Seeds (save a little extra for garnish)

  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper

  • 3 cups of Cooked Rice

  • Optional: Sliced Cucumbers, Peeled Carrots, Edamame, Sliced Avocado, Seaweed

Instructions

  1. Combine all sauce ingredients (excluding tuna, rice and optional veggies) in a large mixing bowl.

  2. Add the Tuna to the bowl and evenly coat the fish in the sauce.

  3. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (or I prefer an hour).

  4. Serve over cold rice and top with extra green onions and sesame seeds.

  5. Add sliced cucumber. Feel free to get creative and add your own raw veggies or seaweed strips to make it fun and colorful too.

    1. We actually loved how easy and delicious this recipe was that we made it twice for this post and had fun with different topping variations.
